Plesk 7.6 comes with Mailenable standard edition as its mail server. This mail server is quite good but it has not some features like IMAP folders so our customers has not “Sent Item” folder in their webmail(Horde).
Do we decide to migrate to SmarterMail.
We bought SmarterMail professional edition license and download the software to the server and prepare to start our migration. We announce our customers about a maintenance window which we guess it takes about 4 hours!
In the our server I had 284 domains with almost 1000 mail account.
We start the process of migration at 2:00 PM with the following steps:
1- Installing SmarterMail.
2- Logging into SmarterMail and changing admin password.
3- Activating our license key.
All the above steps done successfully and it seems everything is OK.
So we login to Pesk 7.6 as admin to switch our mail server to SmarterMail.
I went to “Component Management” section and select SmarterMail.
Then I wait, wait and wait,…
It took 3 hours to create all MailEnalable accounts in Smartermail but unfortunately it failed because of an unknown reason so Plesk did not recognize SmarterMail although we could login to http://127.0.0.1:9998
as admin and all accounts were healthy.
So we switch the mail server in Plesk to SmarterMail again and the same story began.
The Plesk started to create account again and at the end it could not finish it successfully and got MailEnable back.
There might be an error during migration which forced Plesk to rollback to MailEnable so we decide to free more memory and end up unnecessary process and start switching again. This time with more care, no login to SmarterMail admin page, no starting new process during the migration.
One hour after switching to SmarterMail the defpackagemng.exe began to spawn itself in the memory and started to migrate accounts, it took almost 1:30 minutes to migrate 1000 accounts, during this process there were 120 instances of defpackagemng.exe ,120 instances of cmd.exe and also 60 instances of php.exe in the memory. It took one hour again to cleanup the memory from this processes and Wow! The Plesk passed the control to SmarterMail.
So if you want to have the same experience, please keep in your mind the followings:
1- The process takes a lot of time. For 284 domains with 1000 accounts it takes more than 3 hours.
2- During the switching the mail server you can not login to Plesk control panel also your current session will expire.
3- Free the memory and end unnecessary processes before start.
4- You should be very patient, during the process do not manipulate with server and only stay and wait.
